Stroll Invited to Run ‘Game Changers’ Healthcare Innovations Panel
Yesterday morning saw one of the most highly anticipated events for Silicon Valley’s healthcare innovators.
Organized by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the event featured a stacked panel of public and private leaders, including the Secretary of California Health and Human Services Diana Dooley.
Stroll founder and COO Matt Maurer moderated the lively discussion. Some of the most notable moments included:
An impassioned plea for patients to take more ownership of their healthcare, and for industry to do more to teach us how and why to do it. An MRI can cost an average patient $400 to several thousand dollars, and patients need to understand and have access to tools to navigate this reality.
David Fields, EVP of Networks at Blue Shield of CA, made the case that collaboration between entrenched companies and young health tech companies is one of the keys to accelerated change. And this was underscored by Edward Kenkel of Johnson & Johnson, who explained why young companies are advantaged by their skill and ability to build and deploy quickly, but often need the hand of reputable companies to navigate the cogs and incentives of the industry machine.
Secretary Dooley heralded the early successes of Covered California, but was not shy to call attention to the challenges ahead.
Emily Drabant Conley, VP of Business Development at 23andMe, laid out the massive preventative power that exists within genetic screening, while also contrasting the ease and convenience of our on-demand world with the old-fashioned and primitive consumer experience of being a patient.
Finally, EY’s Kailesh Karavadra reminded us how much untapped power we have in an accelerating high technology ecosystem and not to be discouraged by the friction that we feel.
